About the farm

Turner Farm is a diversified organic farm on the island of North Haven in Penobscot Bay, Maine.  We grow MOFGA-certified organic vegetables, herbs, and flowers. We also produce pasture-raised beef and pork. Our products are featured in our farm store and at our barn suppers and events.

We welcome visitors to the farm all four seasons!

All of our vegetables, herbs, and flowers are certified organic by MOFGA. With a focus on intensive cropping systems, leafy greens, microgreens, tomatoes, and garnish crops, we grow hundreds of varieties of plants on about 2 acres. With over 16,000 square feet of hoop house and greenhouse space, we aim for early-season production for our summer market.

VEGETABLES

Our goal is to provide a steady supply of each crop we grow. We start our first seedlings (onions, shallots, leeks) in February in a minimally-heated greenhouse. By March, we are seeding the first beds of arugula and baby kale in our greenhouses, and by April we are planting out into our fields. By mid-summer, the fields and greenhouses are engaged in a steady turn-over of crops. Some of our small-crops beds will see 6 or 8 plantings in a season! We support this intensive cropping by a generous approach to cover-cropping: every field gets rotated out of production for an entire season every three years, and most fields will be cover cropped for part of the season each year. Using cover crops builds soil fertility, increases organic matter, adds nutrients and helps reduce weed pressure.

FRUIT

We grow high bush blueberries, and raspberries.

HERBS AND GARNISHES

We offer a wide assortment of perennial and annual herbs, including dill, cilantro, parsley, fennel, rosemary, mint, marjoram, chives, oregano, savory, lemon balm, and sage. We also grow a variety of garnish plants, including borage, calendula, dill flowers, nasturtiums, pea shoots, and microgreens.

FLOWERS

Our field-grown cut flowers display the vibrant colors of summer. We offer beautiful bouquets to order for your special occasion and for sale at our farm stand. Because so many flowers are grown under high-spray conditions, often far from where they are sold, local organic flowers offer a sustainable, ethical choice that we are proud to offer to our customers.
